3 Tips For Avoiding Procrastination

Tips to Avoid ProcrastinationAt church we recently listened to this sermon about how to avoid procrastination. I so needed to hear it. I think we are all a little prone to procrastination every now and again. Do you ever have something that is constantly in the back of your mind, that you know you need to do but you keep putting it off and avoiding it? Well yep, me too. So I thought I’d share these 3 helpful tips that I learned on how to avoid procrastination… Ready?

1.) Take a small step today, it’s better than taking a big step tomorrow.

It’s so easy for us to say, “I’ll do it tomorrow, I’ll deal with it tomorrow, I’ll have more energy tomorrow, tomorrow works better for me.” But really, once you get to tomorrow you feel the same way towards it as you did today, and nothing really changes. Am I right? Encourage yourself to take a step forward by attempting to at least start today.

2.) Make a ten minute commitment.

When you’re tempted to procrastinate, tell yourself you’ll make a ten minute commitment before putting the task off completely. Try it out for ten minutes and see how it goes. Often, after ten minutes you’ll have enough momentum to keep going and finish the task at hand. If it’s just not happening within ten minutes then leave it for later but at least you did ten minutes more than when you originally started. It’s all about starting small and building up.

3.) Save perfection for another day.

I’ve notice I procrastinate when I’m waiting on the “perfect” moment or the “perfect” time. I’m waiting on the perfect situation, the perfect idea, the perfect environment, but really perfection is what’s holding me back from accomplishing what I need to do. We shouldn’t let perfection hold us up from moving forward. We freeze because we’re anticipating on that perfect something, but that perfect something slowly and rarely comes along. Don’t let perfection get in the way by luring you into procrastination.

Again, these were tips from our pastors sermon, I thought they were helpful. What do you think? Also, what tips do you guys have to avoid procrastination?
