Have you ever noticed that when you hang out with someone long enough you start talking like them? I recently noticed this with myself, I’ve started to talk like Dave. I’ve adapted all these English words and sayings that I NEVER used prior to meeting him. It’s funny and weird hearing an American girl say British words but, I know it just shows how much we rub off on each other and, I kind of like that.
So here they are, some of the English/Dave-isms that I’ve adopted:
Well good.
Normally, I would say “This ice cream’s very good,” but after living with Dave I’ll catch myself saying, “This ice cream’s well good.”
Lovely.
In general, I’ve noticed English people use ‘lovely’ more than Americans. I recently started to adapt it in my everyday language. I wish Americans used it more, it sounds so beautiful and pleasant.
Clever.
Normally, I would describe Samson as a smart dog. Dave always says he’s a clever dog. He’s been saying it so much recently, that I now too, call Samson a clever dog. Something about the word clever, don’t you think it sounds so much more legit?
Proper.
The other day, I noticed myself saying I wanted a proper sandwich. Not just a plain turkey and swiss sandwich, but a ‘proper’ one with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, olives, pickles… BBQ kettle chips on the side.
To be fair.
I’ll say this every now and again and it’s a total Dave saying. I’ve noticed it makes whatever you’re saying sound more important and informative. You should try this one out!
Minging.
This is definitely not a word you hear too often in America. I’ve now caught on to it and there are just certain things you HAVE to describe as minging. For instance, the left over salmon that’s been siting in our garbage can for two days. Totally minging.
Football.
Of course, you can’t live with an English soccer coach and not refer to soccer as football.
Are there any words or sayings that you never said prior to meeting your significant other? I’d love to hear what they are. I think this also goes for close friends and roommates, especially when living in close quarters. I also think it’s a two way street because there are some Chinese sayings that Dave definitely didn’t know prior to meeting me and now he uses them all the time! It’s funny how we catch on to the people we’re with, huh?

My boyfriend for sure – I’ve definitely adopted some of his sayings even the way I discourse.
