How To Make Your Home Feel Like A Getaway Retreat

Dave and I love our rental apartment. It’s the perfect place for the stage that we are at in life right now. It’s cozy and simple, not overly cluttered but not under furnished. It feels comfortable and it has some personal touches to it too. What we really like about it, is that it’s a give-me-twenty-minutes-and-you’re-clean type of job, which is great! I also love when we have friends and family over and someone comments on how cute and cozy our apartment is. As a kid, I loved how warm and inviting our family home was and I always dreamed of creating the same type of environment for my own home. So as you can imagine, when a visitor compliments our apartment, it seriously makes my heart jump with joy! We’ve really made our apartment feel like our getaway retreat. It’s a resting place where we can kick back and put our feet up. Here are some tips on how you can also make your home feel like a getaway retreat.

1.) Candles

A getaway retreat always smells good. Candles are an easy way to make your home smell delicious. We have them in every room. They smell amazing and make our home feel very tranquil. My favorite candle right now is the Vesta Spiced Pumpkin candle. I swear it is THE best pumpkin smelling candle out there. I picked it up at HomeGoods.

2.) Twinkle Lights

Yep, we keep them up all year long and turn them on every evening. There’s no such things as a dimmer in our rental, so twinkle lights serve that purpose and immediately create a chill getaway vibe.

3.) Feel-good Artwork

To make your home feel more like a getaway, put something on the walls. The artwork that we have hung around the apartment is bright and cheery with lots of color. It makes everything feel warm and very welcoming.

4.) Fresh Flowers

They brighten up any room, add life and extra color. I don’t really need to sell you on this one, who doesn’t love fresh flowers?

5.) Reorganize Your Bookshelves

We recently did this and it makes a huge difference! I didn’t think it would, but really, it creates a peaceful and organized environment. Here are some tips on how to successfully style a bookshelf.

6.) Coffee Table Books

Having a good coffee table book around the house is another easy way to make your home feel like a getaway retreat. There’s something about a coffee table book that says, sit down and stay a while longer. This book is one of my favorite coffee table books. It has plenty of awesome and inspiring images to flip through.

7.) A Soft Throw Blanket

A great way to make your home feel like a getaway retreat is by adding items of comfort. A super soft throw blanket does just this. Our throw blanket is always left out on the chair, it’s easy to access and always gets used.

8.) Fresh Air

Even if it’s a bit chilly outside, I like to crack the windows open every so often for a few minutes of fresh air. It does wonders, wakes me up and gets rid of any stuffy air.

9.) Rearrange Furniture

We don’t have the most space to completely rearrange our furniture, but sometimes I like switch up how we position our kitchen table. Change is good and small rearrangements like this can help make your home feel more like a getaway retreat.

10.) Slippers

Remember when I said comfort is key to making your home feel like a getaway? It’s essential to find fuzzy slippers that you look forward to slipping into at the end of the day. When my slippers are on, I’m in relax mode. These ones are especially soft and have lasted me forever.

11.) A Bottle of Red

We always like to make sure we have a bottle of red around the apartment. We look forward to the evenings when we can pop it open and switch off. Having a nice drink in hand helps create a getaway atmosphere.

12.) Beats Pill Speakers

Last year, I got Beats Pill speakers as a gift and when I got them I was like, huh? Why do I need this? I have my lap top and my phone that can both play music. However, I’ve learned that good quality speakers are a million times better and now we only ever use the Beats! Having an awesome music system can really help make your home feel like a getaway retreat.

How do you make your home feel cozy like a getaway retreat? Any suggestions? I’d love to hear them!

That’s cute that you have twinkle lights. I like that idea. For myself and my guy, candles, a cozy blanket and artwork make our space feel like home.

Love these ideas! We recently put up knotty pine on two walls of our living room, and with our brown leather furniture, it’s like a rustic lodge.. I must find those candles! Love anything pumpkin. And I love our gas fireplace.. I’d prefer wood, but it makes for such nice ambiance – and saved us last March when our boiler died!
