Thanksgiving in San Diego

I wanted to share our Thanksgiving weekend because it looked a little different this year. We typically go back to Connecticut and have Thanksgiving with my extended family, however this year Dave had a soccer tournament in San Diego – so I tagged along!  The perks of being a soccer wife is that you can tag along on the away games, but I really only choose to go on the ones in fun locations. 😉 I had never traveled super far distances with Dave’s teams, but after going on this one, man I give him and the soccer parents a lot of credit for pouring their time, energy and money into travel soccer. It is no joke!

Since our flight was on Thanksgiving day, we decided to celebrate Thanksgiving dinner the night before. I have to admit, we catered this one and I’m SO glad we did because it was delicious, super easy, and turned out to be the perfect amount of food for the two of us. We even had enough for leftovers the next day. It was our own little romantic Thanksgiving dinner for two and we pigged out on stuffing and mashed potatoes, went for a walk, and then watched a movie and ate pumpkin pie.

The flight to San Diego from Denver was quick and easy and made us both realize we need to be traveling to California more often. We got in late Thanksgiving night and drove straight to the hotel. By the time we got to the hotel, the team was hungry and the only thing that was open was the Denny’s a few doors down from our hotel. Before then, I couldn’t even tell you guys when the last time was that I stepped into a Denny’s (if there even was a last time?), and there’s a reason for that… not a huge fan. Anyways, it surely was a Thanksgiving night to remember and we’ll leave it at that.

Dave was at the soccer fields for the majority of our trip but I bailed out to go find the beach! I brought a book with me, put my toes in the sand, listened to the waves crash and it was all a glorious feeling. There was also a man playing Christmas music on a trumpet and it felt so weird to be listening to Christmas music with sandy feet, 80 degree weather, and palm trees above my head. I didn’t hate it though!

On one of the nights Dave and I escaped to Old Town, San Diego for dinner. What a fun place! It’s this little Mexican town with lots of great authentic Mexican food and little shops. We bought ourselves a Christmas ornament at one of the local artisan shops, drank margaritas and were serenaded ‘Despacito’ by the mariachi band. I was loving it! I also have to admit that I stashed a few tortillas in my purse because they were homemade and tasted that good.

One of the best parts about being in San Diego was that we got to see friends of ours who we knew in Michigan. We saw their new homes, grabbed dinner and ice cream sandwiches and caught up. It was SO great seeing them and it felt like not much time has gone by since we were in our little college town. Now that we know San Diego isn’t too far and our friends have a spare bedroom, I’m sure they’ll be getting more visits from us in the future!
